THE PROBLEM
Water is the most essential element for our bodies and therefore the foundation for a life in good health and wellbeing. In Europe, tap water is generally considered safe, but it may not be as clean as people think.

Contaminants like
microplastics, small
amounts of
pharmaceuticals,
chlorine, and
heavy metals
present significant threats that many people are not realizing.
Microplastics, now found in European tap water, can accumulate in
the human body, potentially leading to tissue damage and chronic
health issues. Chlorine, commonly used for disinfection, can form
harmful byproducts that have been linked to cancer and other health
problems. Heavy metals like lead and copper, often from aging pipes,
can cause neurological damage and other serious conditions. While
European tap water often meets safety standards, it may still
contain trace elements that can pose long-term health risks.
Recent studies have raised concerns about the quality of tap water
in Europe, revealing that it may contain various contaminants not
typically considered by the general public. For instance, research
has detected the presence of microplastics in drinking water across
several European regions. In Belgium, microplastics ranging from 25
to 1000 micrometers were found in both treated drinking water and
tap water, suggesting that current water treatment processes may not
fully eliminate these particles. Moreover, other studies have
highlighted the presence of pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, and other
chemicals in European tap water. (BioMed Central)
OUR MISSION
At earthfilter we strive to raise awareness about the importance of pollutant-free drinking water in Europe. Our goal is to produce environmentally friendly products that are made of natural materials, are aesthetically sophisticated and contribute to the health of our customers.
The earthfilter was developed to make a statement against the often unnecessary use of plastic. Plastics dominate our earth and are useful and indispensable in certain contexts, such as in medicine or electronic devices. However, we believe that many products can also do without them.
Every day, we make many purchasing decisions, often without knowing where and by whom our goods are produced. Durable products that do not break down quickly and thus save resources are becoming increasingly rare. Therefore, as a company, we want to take a different path. It is particularly important to us which partners we work with and how they impact the environment. Our company also aims to raise awareness about the importance of water. Water is more than just a vital resource and deserves greater attention. We are pleased to help people use water more consciously and promote their health.

CLEAR WATER
CLEAR FUTURE

RAISING AWARENESS
At earthfilter, we are committed to not only promoting awareness about the importance of safe drinking water across Europe but also advocating for greater transparency in water quality reporting.
We believe that everyone deserves honest and complete information
about the water they consume. Unfortunately, powerful industries and
governments often fall short in disclosing the full extent of
pollutants present in drinking water, and we strongly believe that
much more could be done to ensure access to truly clean, healthy and
vibrant water.
Our goal is to push for more rigorous testing and the public
disclosure of all contaminants, including those currently
underreported or undeclared. We strive to hold those in power
accountable, ensuring that the public is informed about potential
risks and the actual quality of their water.
We actively support the strengthening of the implementation of the EU
Drinking Water Directive by educating communities on water quality
issues and advocating for higher standards in water safety. Through
our initiative, we work to ensure that everyone understands the vital
role of clean drinking water in maintaining health and well-being. We
collaborate with policymakers and local organizations to help enhance
the monitoring, transparency, and compliance with EU water safety
standards, contributing to a healthier future for all.
The EU Drinking Water Directive

The EU Drinking Water Directive (Directive 98/83/EC) has the primary goal of ensuring that water intended for human consumption across the European Union is safe, clean, and healthy.
The directive establishes strict quality standards for drinking water,
focusing on microbiological and chemical parameters to protect public
health. It requires member states to regularly monitor water quality,
ensuring compliance with the set standards. This includes testing for
contaminants such as bacteria, heavy metals, and other pollutants. It
mandates that water suppliers provide clear and accessible information
to consumers about the quality of their drinking water. This includes
publishing annual water quality reports and informing the public about
potential risks. The directive also focuses on emerging threats to
water quality, such as microplastics and endocrine-disrupting
chemicals, ensuring that new contaminants are effectively monitored
and controlled.
